  • The Good Parts
    Newsletter #3 by Nitro

    10/9/09

In my opinion, there’s a big difference between “Can or Can’t” and “Will or Won’t”. Lately I’ve come across several people, including clients that seem to give up or let distractions get in the way of their fitness goals. I believe this is due to lack of planning and commitment. When it comes to any kind of commitment, you can’t just focus on “The good parts”

1st Lets discuss the “Can or Can’t” issue. Before you take on any project dealing with fitness, or anything in life actually, you’ve got to know what your chances are of completing it. For example: If you were a fighter, would you take on an opponent knowing that you couldn’t win? Unless you are a professional who gets paid “win or lose or draw”, you should pick your battles wisely. Fighters study their opponents and make plans to get past someone’s defense, and defend against someone’s offence. The same goes for any fitness project. “If you don’t plan to win, you plan to fail!” Set goals that are realistic. Understand your own personal weaknesses and prepare to defend yourself against them! Here’s a personal example from me: When I’m getting ready for a show or photo shoot I always take a cooler of food wherever I go. It would seem like a pain, however I know that If I get hungry (and I’m always Hungry!), and I don’t have a healthy food choice at my disposal, mistakes will be made!

2nd “The Will or Won’t” issue. I often make comments about lifting from “My Soul”. When I get ready to take on any obstacle in the gym, or even in life, I’ll be honest with you; It’s rare that I lose! When my mind, body and soul are aligned, I’m pretty much unstoppable!!! I visualize my victory and make sure everything’s in place so I have no excuse in my mind of anything else happening except obtaining my goals! Now the good thing is……. everybody has one! When you dig deep down in your heart and give it your best, that’s an awesome feeling! And there isn’t anything better than completing a goal! Anything worth having is worth sacrificing for. So when you enter the gym, park or wherever you plan on doing battle; remember why you showed up! When the pressure’s on, will you press forward or will you fold? Always push forward… never give up… DO YOUR BEST!

For my last point I’m going to keep it very simple. Any commitment that you choose to take on, Workout program, Marriage, Babies, even a Puppy; you must follow through. I’m talking good, bad, and ugly! When a puppy needs to be walked, you have to do it! Rain, cold weather, or super hot, you can’t just focus on the good parts like playing in nice sunny weather and being greeted at the door with a wagging tail. A commitment involves everything! Keep this in mind when you discuss your fitness goals with your personal trainer.

  • "NO CHALLENGE, NO CHANGE!!" Newsletter #2 BY Nitro

    03/13/09

I’m going to start this newsletter with a true story that happened recently. A client was training with an associate of mine and was complaining about what he told her to do for her Personal Training session. My friend looked at her and said, “Let me get this straight, you want to pay good money for a less intense workout?” She stopped, thought about it, and then proceeded to do exactly what he told her to do. Now you can just imagine what that workout would’ve went like if she was attempting it on her own.

Unless you’ve already obtained your goals, and train just to maintain what you have, challenging yourself is integral to your program. You must train outside your comfort zone to reach the next level. This includes all aspects of your program; weight training, cardio, and dietary needs. Personally, when I’m getting ready for an event, I challenge myself with all of these components, and my body responds very quickly. Now, aside from the fact that I have several years of experience, when the pressure of the challenge comes on, I welcome it. You have to remember, pressure makes diamonds!

When you change the way you train and you have to dig deep down to make it through your set; that’s a “good” thing! Especially when it comes to the diet, you’ve got to feel your body go through something. Here are some examples of challenging your eating habits:

    • Cutting or adding calories
    •  Subtracting carbs to cut weight or adding to help with muscle building
    •  Upgrading the quality of your food and supplements

You have to feel your body making some type of adjustment to the change or the change may not be good enough.

In conclusion, it’s now time for you to “run towards the fire,” like I always say. Don’t back down when obstacles come your way; overcome them! Get outside your comfort zone and create new challenges. When your instructor tells you to jump not only should you ask how high but, how many times as well! NO CHALLENGE, NO CHANGE!!

  • "What Can I Do About This?" Newsletter #1 By NITRO

    Posted 1/14/2009

As a Personal Trainer, one situation that happens to me often is when someone comes up to me, grabs a body part (usually their stomach) and says, “How can I get rid of this?” Now from my point of view, I’m more concerned with what you did or didn’t do to get your body in the situation where it is now. Even if I were to give someone suggestions on what to do to help reduce their body fat, unhealthy habits will reduce or even totally counter their results. In other words, do you want something to help you with a runny nose or would you prefer to deal with the cold itself that’s causing your nose to actually run? How about an even better idea of boosting your immune system so you won’t get colds in the first place much less a runny nose to go with it? This is how I prefer to tackle the problem so when you drop the body fat, lose weight, gain muscle and tone up; you won’t just put it right back on. So here are my suggestions:

    1. GET YOUR MIND RIGHT! You’ve got think fit to be fit. Understand that this is a lifestyle change. You got to live it. I know many people who workout but do just as much or more unhealthy things, such as drinking beer for example. If you don’t want a “beer belly” then you should limit or stop the amount you consume.
    2. GET YOUR BODY MOVING! An exercise program that involves challenging your body with anything from weight training, cardio, even yoga will help you lose body fat and tone those problem areas. This is where a Personal Trainer comes in handy. Even if it’s just to map out a program that’s just for you where you can be more efficient and not waste your time or create injuries by making mistakes.
    3. A HEALTHY DIET!  You need to stop putting the fat back in! Having an expert such as myself look over a food log is the best way to go. You should also eliminate refined things from your diet such as white flour and white sugar for example. You can replace those things with wheat bread, honey or brown sugar. Also steer more towards more low impacting carbohydrates like brown rice and sweet potatoes.

These are just a few tips to help you with the “how can I get rid of this?” situation. For questions or suggestions for future articles you may contact us or click here to e-mail me.
